Marie Curie

The Reading Rooms - Verbal Arts Centre Londonderry

Description of service: 
The Reading Rooms is an innovative project using quality literature to engage people through shared reading. It is led by a trained facilitator where they read a short story and poem that engages. It is delivered in small groups of around 8 people with a trained facilitator that allows the person to engage with themselves, engage with the literature and engage with the group. The group encourages a 'Can do' positive attitude with a therapeutic approach for people living with depression and anxiety or following a cancer diagnosis.

HOPE Course, Macmillan Support Self Management Programme - 6 of 6 week course)

Description of event: 
The Macmillan H.O.P.E (Helping to Overcome Problems Effectively) course is a six week supported self-management programme to help people gain the skills to better manage their condition. The course is designed for people who are receiving treatment or who are post treatment and on a survival and recovery period in their cancer journey. Hope is licensed by Coventry University and is uniquely delivered by healthcare professionals and trained lay facilitators who have been affected by cancer. The course is delivered over 6 weekly sessions of 2½ hours and equips patients with strategies to help them manage issues regarding positive living and coping with a chronic illness, goal setting and achievement, problem solving, self confidence, gratitude and personal strength exercises, fatigue and relaxation techniques.
